REBECCA DAYAN + SHK

The model, actress and undisputed fashion maven, Rebecca Dayan, sits down with Seen Heard Known to answer our three favorite questions.

SHK: WHAT SHOULD WE… SEE?
REBECCA DAYAN: L’apollonide. A film by Bertrand Bonello.
HEAR? Bill Swan’s version of “Don’t Be Cruel.”
KNOW? “School kills creativity!” as quoted and argued by Sir Ken Robinson on Ted.

Born on the seventeenth of April in the South of France, Rebecca Dayan is the daughter in a family aplenty of varied artistic over-achievers and rich pursuers of creative endeavors. Like her mother and sisters before her, Dayan’s proclivity to the spotlight felt nothing short of an instinctively natural, some may even say “magnetic” move on her behalf. With lips that remind us why the French invented that infamous “kiss” of theirs, emerald green eyes that shine so bright they could give her city of lights a run for its money, and her perfectly angled, empirical nose, this model / actress puts to shame any stereotypes about what a girl of her beauty should be like. In fact, Dayan carries herself with such an unbelievably self-confident repertoire that were she not to open her mouth and empathetically seduce us with her raspy, cigarette-stained voice, her coolness may very well be mistaken for coldness.

Rebecca’s foray into the arts began as a child where she first found her love for the camera (or arguably, the camera first found its love for her) on stage in school plays. When not entertaining the crowds, Dayan also explored her love for drawing, painting, and sculpting — all passions of hers, which she continues to work at in the little free time she has.

At the age of 18, her first official “break” came when she was introduced to the world of high fashion modeling by legendary photographer Peter Lindbergh. Shortly after, came a move to Paris where Dayan’s career quickly began to take off. In addition to modeling in Paris, she also filled her free time and self-described “hyperactivity and curiosity” by attending Drama school as well as continuing her studies in art, fashion design and cinema.

A stint as the assistant to the head designer for Sonia Rykiel helped show Dayan around the ropes of a world she was growing increasingly accustomed to, but being so intensely immersed in fashion and fashion alone led Dayan to realize where her real passions in life lay — and so it was that the world of cinema beckoned and Dayan received the call.

Dayan accepted a spot at the prestigious school of Drama in Paris. This call to fate would prove to be fortuitous as it led her to quickly book jobs for music videos (Raphael, directed by Olivier Dahan, Le Tone, directed by Beatrice Leterrier) and short films (Avalanche by Hedvig Maria Maigre, House of Illusions by Daniel Turcan). Her intense devotion to mastering her craft went far from unnoticed as shortly after, Dayan could be spotted sharing the screen with film legend John Travolta in From Paris With Love directed by Pierre Morel as well as LIMITLESS directed by Neil Burger with Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.

Her latest venture? A leading performance in Celeste and Jesse Forever directed by Lee Toland Krieger and starring Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg, as well as a pseudo-permanent move to New York City — as if she weren’t already busy enough.

Today, Dayan is off perfecting her lines for her latest film with director Michael Maren, A Short History of Decay.
