BLOGGER SPOTLIGHT: SUICIDE BLONDE
A chat with the Tumblr-famous blonde.
Known for her interpretations of the tragic blonde, Suicide Blonde has established a cult following on Tumblr, and so has her girlfriend, Bohemea, and their joint blog, Pussy le Queer. With over 16 million views, the photo blog consists of her collection of print and digital photos she’s been collecting since the mid 1990s. From posting daily-inspired photos to live blogging at the Met Gala and the Olympics, the Canadian blogger couple is taking the blogosphere by storm! Meet the mystery woman behind the blog and her personal, visual and musical inspirations. — Jenna Igneri
SO YOU’VE BEEN COLLECTING IMAGES SINCE THE 1990’S, THE EARLY DAYS OF THE INTERNET. OBVIOUSLY, BACK THEN TUMBLR (AND BLOGGING PLATFORMS IN GENERAL, FOR THAT MATTER) WERE NON-EXISTENT. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BRING YOUR INSPIRATIONS AND IDEAS TO AN INTERNET AUDIENCE?
SUICIDE BLONDE: I’ve been online since the mid-nineties, so my progression from print images to digital images really mirrors the technological developments in photography and scanning. I have been collecting images via the Internet for these past 15 plus years, as soon as I discovered there were pictures on the Internet, I was collecting them. Sharing images with a wider audience evolved as the Internet evolved.
SOME OF THE IMAGES YOU POST ARE MORE RECENT AND NOT FROM YOUR PERSONAL ARCHIVES. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY MAKES THESE NEWER IMAGES “SUICIDE BLONDE-ESQUE?”
I suppose it would be that it appeals to my aesthetic — be it the subject or the style.
YOU STATE ON YOUR BLOG THAT YOUR NAME INSPIRATION COMES FROM THE INXS SONG “SUICIDE BLONDE.” HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE SONG?
The idea of the tragic blonde is something I’ve been fascinated with for years now and is something of a theme on my blog — Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Monroe, etc.
WHAT OTHER MUSIC DO YOU PULL INSPIRATION FROM? FASHION?
Bohemea and I are always listening to music while we work. We enjoy film scores (we listen to the Gladiator and Game of Thrones scores almost every day). We both love NIN, Bjork, The Beatles, David Bowie, early-mid Madonna, Fiona Apple, Michael Jackson… This past year we’ve been especially inspired by Florence + the Machine.
YOUR GIRLFRIEND ALSO HAS A HIGHLY FOLLOWED TUMBLR CALLED BOHEMEA, AND TOGETHER THE TWO OF YOU TAKE ON THE BLOGOSPHERE. TELL US YOUR STORY!
Bohemea and I have been together nearly a decade. We spend all our time together and delight each other. We complement each other, work and domesticate together happily, we bring out the best in each other.
YOU AND BOHEMEA DESCRIBE YOUR “DEBAUCHED ALTER-EGO” AS PUSSY LE QUEER. WHAT INSPIRED YOU GUYS TO CREATE THE PUSSY LE QUEER TUMBLR (WHICH, BY THE WAY, EXCITED ME WHEN I SAW MY FRIEND’S CLEAVAGE REPOSED FROM TERRY RICHARDSON’S BLOG)?
We started Pussy le Queer because we wanted a place to share images of only beautiful nude women in one place. On Suicide Blonde and Bohemea, in addition to images of beautiful women, we share images of men, humorous photos, film stills and occasional personal photos; Pussy le Queer is a place where only lovely exposed lady flesh is allowed. It has also been a great place to call attention to amateur models and photographers who might otherwise get lost amongst the images of popular culture featured on Suicide Blonde and Bohemea.
YOU ALSO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE BLOG AT A NUMBER OF MAJOR EVENTS, SUCH AS THE SUMMER 2012 OLYMPICS AND THE MET GALA. WHAT’S YOUR NEXT EVENT?
Next up are the Emmy Awards on September 23rd. We love live blogging events! We get such a kick out of award shows: the fashion, the anticipation and the excitement of seeing our favorite actors interacting on the red carpet and at the show. We also live blog major film events: Cannes and various other festivals, as well as fashion events like the Met Gala and fashion weeks. When we live blog, it’s often on twitter as well. You can follow our twitters here and here.
YOU GUYS ALSO POST SOME INTERESTING CONTENT ON YOUR BLOGS. BOHEMEA’S MAD MEN ANALYSIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD READ, AND AS A FELLOW VEGETARIAN, I ENJOY THE MEATLESS MONDAY RECIPES ON FLICKR! ANY NEW PROJECTS COMING UP TO LOOK OUT FOR?
Nothing is planned right now other than continuing our current projects. We’d like to promote more artists and photographers, as well as review products companies, entrepreneurs or designers. Bohemea is considering writing Boardwalk Empire or The Walking Dead reviews this fall.
I SEE THAT YOU SUPPORT TREVOR’S HELPLINE, AN ORGANIZATION FOR LGBT AND QUESTIONING YOUTH. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE WHO MAY BE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR IDENTITY?
The main thing I would tell people who are struggling with their identity is that, at your core, you know who you are. Revealing who you really are is liberating and will set you on a path to connecting with people who love you for you. If your struggle is affecting you because you feel it isn’t safe to be yourself, there are people you can talk to, people you can confide in, who can help in many ways.
