UP AND COMING NOTICE

Laura Siegel

Laura Siegelʼs magnificent debut Spring/Summer 2012 collection is an eclectic medley of sculptural and textured garments that delicately dress the body. Siegel designs for a fashion forward and socially conscious woman — she utilizes all-natural materials in her work (silk, cotton, bamboo and Japanese gima) and partners with artisans from around the world to create her pieces. She develops block-prints with the Khatri family from Ajrakhpur in the Kutch region of India, knits with a select group of Bolivian women artisans, and intricate embroidery with the women of the nomadic Indian tribe Rabari. Collaborating with a community of fabric dyers in Indiaʼs Munnar, she ensures that color and pattern is applied naturally to her fabrics. The visionary and ambitious 24-year-old, who has studied at Parsons School of Design and at Central Saint Martins, and who has received the Rising Star Award at the 2010 Vancouver Fashion Week, is undoubtedly heading toward fashion fame. — Anastasia Kudrashova
