RECAP: BABY’S WEARING BLUE JEANS

Montreal’s Mac DeMarco takes CMJ by storm.

Mac DeMarco was definitely one of this year’s CMJ stars — playing a total of eight showcases for the week, many with fellow Captured Tracks majors, such as Diiv and Wild Nothing. After a couple of failed attempts at catching him, I was lucky enough to finally get a chance to see him at the Life or Death showcase at the 92Y Tribeca.  It was everything I had wanted/expected out of Mac. The combination of his jangly pop sound and sometimes heartfelt, sometimes weirdly odd lyrics were incredible live.  Although his voice wasn’t skewed to sound like Elvis during “Baby’s Wearing Blue Jeans” and “Rock & Roll Night Club,” Mac’s carefree and quirky vibe was definitely captured during his performance.  And his gap-tooth is so damn endearing. I am happy to say that it is a few days later and my body is still completely covered in bruises. Three random dudes (with whom I was really just trying to flirt with…) and I decided to start a mosh pit, which I don’t think the press-heavy audience appreciated very much.  I don’t even think you can really mosh to Mac, but we definitely did. — Jenna Igneri
